  • 3 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 8 cups flour


  1. Put yeast in bowl, then add water. Do not stir and let sit until bubbly.
  2. Add sugar, salt and oil. Mix.
  3. Turn on mixer and add flour. Mix until dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover and let rise 1 hour in a warm, draft-free area until doubled (or more).
  5. Punch down dough and divide into two balls.
  6. On oiled surface, roll out each ball into a 1" thick rectangle. Roll up on long side.
  7. Place both loaves on a lightly greased cookie sheet and cut 4 slits on top of each loaf.
  8. Let rise for approximately 15-20 minutes, then bake at 375° for 25 minutes.
  9. When done, cover with butter and let sit for 15 minutes. Serve with jam.

Servings: Makes 2 large loaves.
