German Chocolate Pie

This recipe has been adapted from Taste of Home Baking Cookbook.
 

Ingredients:

  • 9" unbaked deep dish pie shell
  • 4 1-oz semi sweet chocolate squares (can use German chocolate if you prefer)
  • 1/4 c. butter, cubed
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 3 T. cornstarch
  • 1/8 t. salt
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 t. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 c. chopped pecans
  • 1 1/3 c. flaked coconut

Directions:

  1. Make pie crust and put into a deep dish 9" pie tin.
  2. In a microwave, melt chocolate and butter; stir until smooth and transfer to larger bowl.
  3. GRADUALLY add milk; set aside.
  4. In large bowl, combine sugar, cornstarch and salt.
  5. Stir in eggs and vanilla.
  6. GRADUALLY stir in chocolate mixture.
  7. Pour into pastry shell.
  8. Combine pecans and coconut; sprinkle over filling.
  9. Bake in preheated 375° oven for 40-50 minutes or until puffed and browned.
  10. Cool for 4 hours. Chill before serving. Store in refrigerator.

Servings: Makes one deep-dish 9 inch pie.
