This recipe comes from Melody's kitchen


  • 3 c. flour
  • 4 to 6 T. shortening
  • 2 t. baking powder
  • 1 t. salt
  • 1 1/4 c. warm milk
  • Oil for cooking


  1. Cut shortening into flour; add all other dry ingredients.
  2. Add milk and mix with fork.
  3. Knead into a ball and let sit covered for 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. On flour surface, roll into a rectangle 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Cut with pizza cutter into 2x2 inch or 3X3 inch squares.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 375º (have the oil about 1/3 the deepness of the pot).
  7. Stretch each piece of dough with your hand and place in oil.
  8. Turn when one side gets golden; cook briefly; remove and drain on paper towel.
  9. Serve with cinnamon and sugar or honey.

Servings: Makes 8 sopapillas.
