Ingredients:

Choose either the 1 1/2 lb. dough:

  • 1 1/2 lb. dough
  • 1 T. yeast
  • 3/4 t. salt
  • 1/4 c. sugar or 2 T. honey
  • 7/8 c. warm water
  • 3 T. olive oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 c. whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 c. bread flour

or the 1 lb. dough

  • 2 t. yeast
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 3 T. sugar
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 T. olive oil
  • 1 c. whole wheat flour
  • 1 c. bread flour

Note: If not using whole wheat flour, white flour may be substituted for both flours.

Directions:

  1. Put yeast, salt, sugar and water into mixer.
  2. Let yeast bubble.
  3. Add oil and egg.
  4. Turn on mixer and add flours, 1/2 c. at a time.
  5. Mix until dough is smooth and elastic.
  6. Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface and divide dough into pieces.
  7. Shape pieces, place on greased cookie sheet and flatten each piece.
  8. Cover and let rise in a warm oven 10 to 15 minutes until almost doubled. (Hint: turn oven on Warm setting for 1 minute, then turn it off, and place covered dough in oven to rise. Remove sheet from oven to preheat.)
  9. Bake 12 to 15 minutes in preheated 400º oven until golden brown. When cool, split buns in half horizontally.

Note: 1 1/2 lb. makes 10 hamburger or 12 hot dog buns. 1 lb. makes 7 hamburger or 8 hot dog buns.

Servings: Serving based on which shape you choose to make.
